Old-Fashioned Grandmother

Old-Fashioned Grandma

1             I grabbed my glass of milk and climbed into bed as my grandmother told me a story. I told my mother that I didn’t want to hear Grandmother’s story, but she made me listen anyway. I was already in the 5th grade and having a grandmother like mine was so uncool. My grandmother had lived in France her whole life and moving to America with my parents was strange. Just 2 years ago Grandma had moved back to France.  She came back to visit me in America and told me about how good it felt to be back in France.

2             Unlike my friends’ grandmothers, mine was very old-fashioned and uncool. Kelly Fisher’s grandmother bought cool fashionable clothes at the La Bella Mall for her. My grandmother bought cloth from the local craft store to make her own clothes. Benjamen Wright’s grandmother drove a cool, red sports car and always picked him up for ice cream. My grandma preferred to take me on the bus.  She enjoyed taking me to the park to feed the ducks. Richard’s and Jenny Parker’s grandmother took them out to eat at fancy restaurants. My grandmother preferred to kill the chicken and cook it herself.  It wasn’t that I didn’t love my grandmother.  I just wished she was less old-fashioned.

3             This morning I woke up tired and irritated.  Grandma slept in my room, and she knitted the whole night.  I heard the loud clanking of her knitting needles all night long. I walked downstairs and grabbed my back pack, ready to go to school. I was about to grab my jacket when I noticed that it was gone. All that was there was a baby blue knitted jacket with pink flowers on the pockets and a rainbow striped collar. I gulped knowing that it was from Grandmother.

4             Being nice, I wore it anyway. I walked outside to the bus stop, and as I climbed on the bus everyone stared at me.  They were all trying to hold in their laughs. Billy Holdmen, King of Dullness, was the first to break the silence.  He pointed at me and laughed loudly, “What a walking circus!”

“Be Quiet, Holdmen!” I shouted.  I was angry.  “So what if my grandmother bought it for me?”  Billy made a face at me.

I sat down next to my best friend, Becky, who told me not to worry but I could tell she was about to laugh too.

5             At recess I refused to wear the jacket, and instead tied it around my waist. I shoved my hands into my jean pockets to keep warm but the September wind blew too hard. Just as I was about to put on the jacket, my grandmother rushed over to me.  She had a school visitor’s pass on. She smiled and looked at the jacket. “Here,” she said as she handed me a gift bag, “This is for you. It’s a little something I bought for you from France.”

I opened the bag and pulled out a tan-colored designer jacket. The jacket was from the Sweet Lilly fashion collection. It wasn’t even available in America yet!

“Wow!” I said as I put on the jacket. My grandmother then took the blue, rainbow-collared jacket out of my hands.

“This is my jacket. I meant to switch your old jacket with that new one, but you took off with my jacket before I had the chance to.”  I smiled at my old-fashioned grandmother. Even though she was uncool I still loved her very much.
